Audience Profiling

Who is your audience going to be?

My audience is going to be young people within the age range of 15-28. I think that this is a good aged range to choose as it allows a wide range of people to enjoy the product, whilst still being relatable. When it comes to gender, I think that the product will be suitable to people of all genders. This is because the narrative will feature issues that both males and females can endure. the film will feature a coming of age story, and this is something everyone goes through in their lives. The reason I have cut off the age range at about 28 is because with an indie style product about a coming of age story, people in their 30's+ would not be able to relate to what the characters feel, as society has changed a lot for when they would have grown up. I also think that the narrative will be most suitable to people from the UK, although places like the USA, France, and other western countries might also relate. The reason I think British people would be most suitable is because it will be an indie style film, so a lot of the content will be very regional specific, to the UK. Even though everyone in the world experiences coming of age problems, young people in Britain have completely different lives to say young people in Japan. In reference to the class system of Britain, I think that the classes most suitable for this product would be between C1 - E. I know that this is a large class range, but it is the genre that lends itself to a large amount of people. A British indie film can be enjoyed by middle class people, all the way to unemployed students. I wouldn't think that anyone above C1 (lower middle class) would watch this film, as coming from a higher middle or upper class background doesn't not present itself with the same type of relatable problems as the other classes do. The psychographics of this narrative would be classed under both 'reformers' and explorers. I will include a definition of these below;

REFORMERS: PEOPLE WHO WANT SOCIAL CHANGE, ARE UNIMPRESSED BY STATUS AND MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON THEIR         VALUES (E.G. ENVIRONMENTALISTS)
EXPLORERS:  ADVENTUROUS PEOPLE WHO LIKE TALKING RISKS

The reason I have included both of these psychographic types is because the motives of the protagonist would be that of the reformer. Someone who dislikes their life, maybe due to social problems. Then they would go on an adventure to help resolve this problem. This makes it relatable to both psychographic genres.

Conventions of movie trailers

Here are three trailers I have picked that cover different genres and movie styles. Each trailer is completely different as they are designed to appeal to a different audience.

Ghost World:

Ghost world is a 2001 American comedy drama directed by Terry Zwigoff. The movie is based on a comic book of the same name. It stars Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi as social outsiders in an unnamed american city. The soundtrack of the trailer is important as it is a song that features in the actual film. It is a song an Indian rock n' roll song from a 1965 bollywood film and the protagonist dances to it at the start of the movie. The song comes in and out and fades away everytime a new character speaks. This gives the overall trailer a happy and upbeat sound. having obscure yet light hearted soundtracks was not uncommon from films and film trailers of this genre in the 90's and early 00's. The characters are not introduced in a particular way, and some characters are included in the trailer but they are not even a main character in the movie. Different shots are used but almost all images featured in the trailer are taken straight from the movie. Everytime the music fades to show a new scene, there is a screen wipe that takes it from shot to shot. At the end the title appears on screen and a voice over announces the name and the details of the movie like the director etc.

Submarine:

Submarine is an independent British coming of age film adapted from a novel by Joe Dunthorne. The film was written and directed by Richard Ayoade and stars Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige. The movie centres around the story of a teenager in Wales who falls in love and tries to solve the problems facing his love life, as well as his parents. The trailer is very good for showing the conventions of an indie film, as there are some features that make the film appeal to a niche audience. The trailer begins with a shot of the beach at dusk as a typewriter shows the name of the 'supportive executive producer,' Ben Stiller. This would have got the attention of a larger audience as he is a well known name. The soundtrack of the trailer is important as as well as ghost world, the soundtrack also features in the movie.

Narrative Theory

Here I have made a presentation on what narrative is when referring to literature or film, and the 5 different narrative theories that have been created to show what a stereotypical narration looks like.

The Double

The double is a 2013 British black comedy thriller film written and directed by Richard Ayoade and starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. All three advertising medias for the film show continuity. The protagonist is shown on both the poster and the dvd cover in the same photo. The photo that has been used for the poster and dvd cover link clearly to the theme of the film. The simplicity of the advertisement pictures give the reader a good idea that the genre is not horror, or action, as there is no indication of what would stereotypically be in a horror /action / romantic comedy. The trailer is really good at showing the type of film that it is. It includes a good understanding of the plot and who the protagonists are. its show the humour in it while also showing the psychological thriller side as well. It does show the conventions of an indie film trailer, the music and editing show that there is definitely a target audience for this film. the main characters are introduced well so the trailer does not solely focus on the two protagonists (played by the same actor.) overall the continuity shown throughout all three mediums present the narrative of the film greatly, and helps the consumer relate all three to the film, growing the audience at the same time.

Enemy

Image result for enemy film dvd cover

For the second research film, I have chosen 'Enemy' directed by Denis Villeneuve. It stars Jake gyllenhaal and is a Canadian-Spanish psychological thriller. The reason I chose to compare this one with the double is because both movies came out in the same year, loosely based on the same concept, a man who is confronted with his doppelgänger and has to deal with them in their lives. The differences are that the double is that that is an independent British film, whereas Enemy is a bigger budget Canadian film. When I researched the film posters, a lot of different ones came up. Due to the fact that this was not a big box office film, I was unsure whether or not some of then were official or not. The two I have shown are similar as they both feature the same style. however, these were both completely different to the dvd cover and trailer style. The posters are similar but the fact that they are different to the dvd cover shows inconsistency in the marketing. This would make growing new fans or members of the general public harder, as this film already has a very niche genre. A benefit of the DVD cover is that it promotes that the director formerly directed 'Prisoners' a hugely popular film that made $122.1 million at the box office. It would have been better if this was also shown on the posters as I think that would have attracted more people.

Story board - scene plan

Here is a storyboard that I have created on a website called storyboardthat.com. This was the first time I had used this website and it is good for easily creating storyboards for simple narratives for people who aren't that experienced with graphic design. I have designed six storyboard shots that give a rough outline as to what the story of our horror chase trailer will be like. Beths character is the first one to be introduced, and I will be playing the ghost/spirit that chases Beth at the church.

Made with Storyboard That

More detailed plan for filming

Here me and Beth have planned how we will film our horror chase so we can refer back to this when filming takes place.
Scene 1:
blackout- slow introduction to establishing shot.

Establishing shot/ Pan- of the Church to be able to set the scene, to see the location in which the character wants to get to.

long shot -Bethany walking through the alleyway, towards the church, looking nervous as she feels that someone is watching her.

close up/two shot- to show Bethany's expression on her face of being scared, more shots of her walking

Zoom- To show that the spirit is approaching Bethany.

Over the shoulder shot - The spirit is really close to Bethany and is about to get her.

Medium close up- Bethany looks around to show that she can feel the spirit close to her. "LEAVE ME ALONE"

long shot/point of view shot- to show that Bethany is looking around to see if she can see the spirit. Could be a pan shot.

extreme close up - the spirit is right in front of Bethany and is screaming at her.

Mid close up- Bethany screaming and running away

Long shot/from the side of bethany - Bethany running through the graveyard towards the Church, looking behind her.

Extreme long shot- Bethany running towards the church, screaming and crying

Medium shot/Zoom- bethany banging on the door, the zoom to show the spirit is again approaching her. No one is in the church, the tension builds as she knows she is going to get caught.

Over the shoulder shot- the spirits hand reaches out for bethany's shoulder.

Extreme close up - Bethany's face screaming as the spirit has caught her and knows she is going to die.

Zoom- zooming into Bethany's mouth as she is screaming.

*Blackout*

Horror movie Posters

Here are some horror movie posters that I have found to help us when we come to plan how we are going to film our preliminary task. I thought that it would be good to see how some professional film posters present themselves and how they convey the theme of horror.

Image result for horror movies postersImage result for horror movies postersImage result for the wig poster

For The Scream poster, it is clear to see that the woman on the front is the victim or one of the victims in the movie. This then suggests that the movie is more of a thrasher/real life horror rather than a supernatural one. The close up of her face shows is effective in showing her emotions and this is definitely something that we will use in our trailer.
The Friday 13th poster shows the killer in a dark/eerie lighting. This is good for showing the horror aspect and makes it clear that he is the killer. Additionally, the scene has been set by the trees in the back, and as we intent to use outdoor / alley as one of our shots, it gives us a good idea on how to position our killer in the trailer.
Finally, the last poster is of a Korean horror film called The Wig. The reason I decided to include this poster is because it inspired me on how I shall look when I play the character of the ghost/spirit. The film (similar to the original ring movie) has its villain as a young girl with long dark hair covering its face. This is really effective when it comes to horror and the supernatural aspect of the theme. As I have long hair, I will most likely be using this to my advantage to easily look scarier.

Plan for our Pleriminary task

Here is the brief that was given to us for our preliminary task:
For the preliminary activity you will be working in groups of three or four.

You will be producing a moving image product for a short narrative within a genre of the following:
·         western gunfight
·         horror chase
·         romantic encounter
·         gangster deal
The product must be no longer than 60 seconds and the work should be planned and divided between the group.  All members must develop their practical skills in the use of the camera, tripod, editing and sound.  Each member of the group will produce their own edit.

The project must include;
·         a shotlist
·         a storyboard
·         a script
·         2 characters
·         use of all of the camera shots/ angles and movements listed below
·         dialogue
·         titles
·         a soundtrack
·         mise-en-scene
·         a final product
Shots that you must include:

1.Establishing shot
2. Long shot
3. Medium shot
4. Close-up
5. Extreme close-up
6. Low angle shot
7. High angle shot
8. Medium close-up
9. Tracking shot
10.Over the shoulder shot
11.Point of view shot

You can use other shots too and you can use the above more than once if you wish.
Look at the examples below to get ideas.

You will have to complete this work before you leave for the summer.  This will mean using a lot of independent study time.  You must get used to this as this will be the expectation throughout this coursework project.'
Our initial ideas:

Me and Beth, who I will be working with throughout my A2 project, have come up with some ideas for our preliminary task. We have chosen a 'horror chase' from the list of possible genres above. We chose this as I immediately came up with a good location to use and that choosing a horror will be a good way to learn how to properly use iMovie. We have planned that I will play a ghost/spirit character, and Beth will play the victim. There will be religious connotations to the trailer and this will be shown through our location.

Location:

For the location, I have thought of using the local church near my house, there is also a long alleyway that could be used to our advantage in the horror chase. The location is good because it is near us and is quiet during the week so there will be no problem when it comes to filming. It also helps us portray the horror aspect of the trailer.

Characters:

We thought that I could be the villain/spirit, due to my dark hair and clothes and that Beth will be the stereotypical 'damsel in distress' type character that I will be chasing. Having only two characters keeps the plot simple and easy to follow for the short amount of time that we have.
